August in review!

What a crazy hot month August was, and it was a busy one for us at the shop too! In this newsletter, we'll talk about the Pivot Cycles demo, the revamped Rockwood challenge, the Canada 55+ games, some exciting cycling events to come this fall, and an exciting new program where we've partnered with the Inside Out Nature Center to provide bike rentals at Rockwood Park!

We were super excited to welcome the Pivot Cycles Demo crew to the area August 10th. Despite the torrential rain the day before, we had a great event! There was concern that the park would be too mucky for folks to get a real feel for how great the Pivot bikes are, but true to form Rockwood drained and dried out in all the key places with only the usual culprits being a bit swampy. All told we had a great night with 20 or so folks trying out some great bikes, and we'll see who gets a new whip for next season! As usual we got too busy riding and chatting about bikes, so we didn't take enough photographs. I know, I know, but believe me we are working on it! That said, check out a couple of snaps of the demo van packed to the gills!

The annual Rockwood challenge took place August 19th. This year's race featured some great changes and a huge show of support from the cycling community from all over the province. The race lap was all new this year and featured the recently revamped Frying Pan Lake as well as last year's newly established Bunny Rampage to name just a couple. It was a challenging and fun lap, and it was great to show off more the park and the hard work of the local trail crew! This year's race had the biggest turn out ever, with 112 registrants taking to the starting line! This includes 40+ youth. Yes, that's right, 40+ youth! Wow. It is so great to see the passion for riding and racing bikes is alive and well in New Brunswick youth!

There are a ton of great photographs from the event, so be sure to check out the event page on Facebook where most of the albums have been posted (click here for one, and here for another). See y'all at next year's event.

Saint John was the host city for the 2018 Canada 55+ games, and MCS ran both a road race as well as a time trial event that were well attended. Check out the Canada 55+ games website here, and the event's Facebook page where a link to results for all the events are posted here

This was a great event for the city, and it was so cool to see local folks as well as folks from as far away as the Yukon participate in the cycling events!

Check out the super cool video recap below, and make sure to watch to the end to see some clips of the cycling events!

As always, the local trail elves are hard at work. A few of us were lucky enough to check out the reroute of Mackay Skyway recently, and it is going to be just awesome when it's complete! A reroute around the wettest part of
Corduroy has also been completed. It is awesome to see a trail that was so unsustainable turned right around to be better than ever. Check out some pics from phase one of the Corduroy rehabilitation below.

There are many on going projects, so make sure you check out the Saint John Cycling Facebook page to find the next scheduled trailbuild! No experience is necessary, and all builds are family friendly. Your help at even one build is greatly appreciated, and goes a long way to making sure the trails are awesome for all user groups for years to come!

Though the last couple of days have been super hot, the evenings are cooling off and getting dark quickly. It's a sure sign fall is upon us. With that comes cooler temps making for great cycling both on and off the road. Keep an eye on our Facebook pagefor exciting news regarding a social gravel ride starting soon! We'll be scouting a route this weekend. The plan is to leave from the shop, ride at a relaxed, conversational pace for 30'ish kilometers then end up at a brewery back in the valley for a nice craft beer!

There are several mountain bike events left on this season's calendar, so it's not too late to support Velo NB and the province's dedicated race organizers! First, this coming weekend we have the Four Hours of French Fort Cove. Ride as a team or, go solo. There is no wrong way to participate! Click here to get registered. Saturday, September 22nd, the Woolastook XCO & Grimcross Youth will take place in Woolastook Provincial park. Lastly, the Tour of Elgin mountain bike event is coming up soon! Check back on the Velo NB eventspage for links to the various registration pages.

Cross season is very nearly upon us! Click here to check out the full list of cyclocross (and all other events) left on the Velo NB calendar.

The first cross race of the season will take place next Sunday, September 23rd at Woolastook Provincial Park! Click here to go to the event's registration page!

Lastly, we've recently partnered with the Inside Out Nature Center to offer bike rentals out of the Lilly Lake pavillion at Rockwood Park. This is a great opportunity for residents and cruise passengers alike to see the beautiful park by bike!

Check out the write up by the Nature Center here, and give them (or us) a call with any questions!

There are events coming down the pipe all the time, so as always be sure to check our social media channels for the most up to date happenings!
